Michael B. Potter, MD, is a fellowship-trained, board certified physician practicing Sports and Musculoskeletal Medicine with a broad focus on the comprehensive needs of the patient. Dr. Potter joined TPMG Orthopedics in 2002 and is the current Director of TPMG Physical Therapy.

Dr. Potter earned his undergraduate degree in biology at the University of Virginia and his medical degree at Texas A&M College of Medicine. He completed his residency at Riverside Regional Hospital through the Medical College of Virginia, and a Fellowship in Sports Medicine at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, NC.

In his clinical practice, Dr. Potter employs the use of invasive and non-invasive techniques. He also uses regenerative medicine therapies to include physical therapy and platelet-rich plasma injections. This approach seeks to encourage and amplify the body’s inherent healing mechanisms offering non-surgical solutions to injury.

With over 25 years of Sports Medicine experience, Dr. Potter enjoys working with non-athletes and athletes of all levels. He began as a team physician for Wake Forest University, then as a team physician for the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. He has also been a team physician for over 20 years with the Williamsburg-James City County school system and served 19 years as the lead team physician for the College of William & Mary.

In addition to his medical practice, Dr. Potter lectures throughout the country on a variety of Sports Medicine topics and has been published in textbooks and peer-reviewed research journals. He is currently a Clinical Professor at Virginia Commonwealth University and Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM) working with osteopathic students, residents, and medical students.

  • Walk-in Hours are Monday – Thursday, 8:30 AM – 10:30 AM for injured student athletes.  
  • Same-day or next-day appointments are available, depending on if the injury has taken place during normal business hours. 
  • Services are available at our Williamsburg and Newport News locations.
