Foot and Ankle Surgeon

Matthew A. Hopson, DPM, FACFAS, is a board-certified foot and ankle surgeon who joined TPMG Orthopedics in 2011. He specializes in adult and pediatric deformity correction of the foot and ankle. His practice includes a variety of cases ranging from complex deformities, lateral ankle instability, sports injuries, bunions, foot and ankle fractures, arthritis and other lower extremity ailments. Dr. Hopson is board certified in Foot and Ankle Reconstructive Surgery and is a Fellow of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons.

Dr. Hopson graduated Magna Cum Laude from Washington College and received his Doctor of Podiatric Medicine degree from Barry University School of Podiatric Medicine in Miami, Florida. He completed a three-year surgical residency, specializing in Reconstructive and Trauma Foot and Ankle Surgery at Highlands Presbyterian/St. Luke’s Hospital in Denver, Colorado.

Dr. Hopson has extensive experience in ankle arthroscopy, posterior tibialis tendon dysfunction, external fixation, and limb salvage procedures. He is a pioneer in this region in total ankle replacement surgery, performing the first ankle replacement surgery at each of the hospitals where he is currently on staff.  He continues to lecture on and teach other surgeons this advanced procedure throughout the country.

Dr. Hopson is the co-founder and current Director of the Sentara Foot and Ankle Center in Williamsburg.  This comprehensive center implements the best standard of care techniques and emphasizes the importance of conservative care as a first line option.

In 2014, Dr. Hopson was selected by the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons as a faculty member on their Surgical Skills Committee.  This committee trains surgeons across the country on advanced reconstructive procedures.  Dr. Hopson also serves as a committee member reviewer for the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgeons.

Dr. Hopson has received multiple awards, including being selected as one of Coastal Virginia Magazine’s “Top Docs” for consecutive years.

He is currently on staff at Sentara Regional Medical Center in Williamsburg and Mary Immaculate Hospital in Newport News.
