She completed a residency in neurology at SUNY Upstate Medical University and a fellowship in neurophysiology at Medical College of Virginia and Virginia Commonwealth University. TPMG welcomed Dr. Mayes in 2015, and she provides neurology services at TPMG Neurology in Williamsburg. Dr. Mayes is board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. She comes from a family of physicians, including her father. She believes in instilling a serious approach to medicine with a blend of her sense of humor, which allows for a more comfortable environment for patients and their families. Dr. Mayes is a member of the American Academy of Neurology, American Medical Association, Medical Society of Virginia, Williamsburg and James City County Medical Society and American Headache Society. Dr. Mayes treats all neurological conditions including Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, Parkinson’s disease (PD), multiple sclerosis (MS), seizures, epilepsies, stroke, migraines and other types of headaches, among other neurological disorders. Her special interests include epilepsy, Women’s health, neurotoxin treatment for spasticity, and movement disorders. She provides several in-office procedures and testing, including Electroencephalogram (EEG) for the diagnosis of epilepsy, Electromyography (EMG) used to detect nerve or muscle dysfunction, Trigeminal nerve block used as a therapeutic pain block to relieve facial pain, occipital nerve block used as a treatment for chronic migraines, and Botox injections for chronic migraines, cervical dystonia, hemifacial spasm, blepharospasm, limb dystonia, spasticity. Originally from Vitória, Espírito Santo, Brazil, Dr. Mayes speaks both Portuguese and Spanish. She enjoys spending time with her family and the flair of a small town atmosphere.
