Skin Tags are common benign growths that develop on the skin. They are typically skin-colored, but may appear darker, pink or red (when irritated). Skin tags can be located anywhere on the body, but most commonly develop near folds of skin, like the eyelids, neck and armpit. Skin tags are harmless, but they can be frustrating or become irritating.
While many people live comfortable lives without ever having their skin tag removed, there are some reasons one might need to consult a board-certified dermatologist for skin tag removal.
Should I Have My Skin Tags Removed?
The American Academy of Dermatology Association recommends that skin tags be removed if they become irritated or start to bleed, they feel uncomfortable, or they begin to affect your eyesight. Skin tags can become irritated due to shaving or rubbing against clothing, seatbelts or jewelry.
Skin Tab Removal Procedures
You should never try to remove skin tags by yourself because this could lead to skin damage and infection. Removal of skin tags typically only involves an office visit to your dermatologist. There are a couple of methods used to remove the tags, including cryosurgery, electrodessication and a snip.
Cryosurgery
While it may sound intimidating, cryosurgery is a simple procedure performed by a dermatologist to eliminate skin tags using extreme cold. The skin tag is frozen with a cryogenic agent, like liquid nitrogen, causing the tag to eventually fall off on its own. In some cases, patients may develop a blister or scab before the skin tag falls off. This procedure is performed in the office and is minimally invasive.
Electrodesiccation
Electrodesiccation involves the use of a small amount of controlled electricity to destroy the skin tag. After treatment, patients develop a scab on the skin that typically heals within a few weeks.
Snip
For this in-office procedure, your dermatologist will numb the area near the skin tag and then use surgical tools such as scissors or a scalpel to remove the skin tag. After removal, your doctor will stop the bleeding and bandage the area to prevent infection.
