Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) has now been renamed Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS). Medical professionals made the change in an effort to reduce misunderstandings surrounding this common disease, which affects nearly 13 percent of reproductive-aged women globally. The lifelong health condition is characterized by fluctuations in hormones that affect a variety of bodily processes, including weight, mental health, skin, and the reproductive system.
Why the Name Change?
A panel of experts belonging to a global consortium of over 50 international health organizations decided upon the new name to eliminate confusion and shift misconceptions that assume this condition only affects the ovaries. The name Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) suggests misinformation because it implies cysts form in the ovaries, while the disease itself has not been shown to develop abnormal cysts in the ovaries. The “cysts” that health professionals have identified in the ovaries are actually partially developed eggs.
By shifting the language away from words like “cystic,” physicians and scientists believe they can promote a better understanding of the condition and how it affects the body, instead of just one organ. The confusion around this condition frequently led to delayed or missed diagnoses. Through greater awareness of the condition and its effects, the medical community can push for better care for those suffering from the condition.

Some individuals who have PMOS are asymptomatic. To learn more about whether your symptoms may be a result of PMOS, contact a TPMG healthcare provider for further testing and diagnosis.
