A Certified Nurse-Midwife (CNM) is a licensed, independent health care provider (nurse practitioner) who has a bachelor’s degree in nursing and either a master’s or doctorate in midwifery. CNMs can prescribe medication, order diagnostic tests, make referrals to other healthcare providers as needed, and, depending on their practice location, can admit clients to the hospital. Certified Nurse-Midwives act as primary care providers for women across the lifespan. Their services include gynecologic and well-woman care, pre-conception and family planning assistance, as well as pregnancy, birth, and postpartum care. Some CNMs also provide well-newborn care for the first 28 days of life.
Midwifery is a woman and family-centered model. Midwives provide care that is personally tailored to each individual and family. Midwives work to build strong relationships with the women and families they work with. They focus on open communication and value walking their clients through the shared decision-making process. The midwives at TPMG see their role in your care as guides assisting you along your health journey.
Midwives view pregnancy, labor, and birth as a normal life process, not an illness that must be cured. Our CNMs work with clients to prepare a birth plan specific to their values and desires and emphasize low interventions in the absence of medical need. However, should a situation require additional support, we have close collaborative relationships with physicians and other clinical staff to ensure you are well cared for. Our ultimate goal during the labor process is to ensure you have a safe and respectful birth, one that you will remember for the rest of your life.
While CNMs can practice in a variety of settings, the CNMs at TPMG see patients in the office and attend births at Mary Immaculate Hospital. If you’re looking for a provider who can partner with you as you embark on your pregnancy journey, schedule a consultation with one of our CNMs today.
