Eric M. Byman, MD, ABFM

Family Medicine Physician in Virginia Beach, VA

Eric M. Byman, MD is a board certified family physician with over a decade of experience providing compassionate care to patients of all ages.  Because Dr. Byman believes every person is uniquely created, he is committed to helping patients achieve their best possible health through thoughtful, individualized treatments.

As the managing physician of TPMG Independence Family Medicine in Virginia Beach, Dr. Byman treats patients himself, as well as his highly qualified advanced care practitioner. Together, they provide excellent care to every person seeking their services.  Those services include routine annual physical exams, well-child checks, well-woman exams, and contraception management; they also provide treatment for a vast number of medical problems, from acute illnesses to major chronic health conditions.  Because he is part of TPMG, Dr. Byman has access to numerous medical and surgical specialists within the Group for cases where patients need specialized treatment.

Dr. Byman’s medical interests are many, including regenerative medicine. He provides bioidentical hormone balancing for men and women.  He uses platelet rich plasma (PRP) injections to treat a number of conditions, including Peyronie’s disease and potency problems in men; urinary incontinence, sexual problems, and lichen sclerosis in women (Dr. Byman is the first physician in Hampton Roads certified to provide the O-Shot®); and for the treatment of hair loss and age-related skin changes, to give patients a more youthful look.  He gives Botox® injections to reduce facial wrinkles for cosmetic purposes, as well as to treat chronic migraines and excessive sweating.  He enjoys treating skin conditions, including some skin cancers.  He orders advanced cholesterol testing to optimize lipid management.  He gives therapeutic injections (including PRP injections) for arthritis and other musculoskeletal pain.  He provides women with IUD and Nexplanon® insertion for contraception.  And, because he has a degree in International Medicine, he provides pre-travel counseling and prescriptions to patients traveling overseas.  As a lifelong learner, Dr. Byman is committed to keeping up-to-date with the latest medical treatments, so the list of services he provides continues to expand.

In addition to continuing his own learning process, Dr. Byman is committed to teaching others.  He is an Assistant Professor of Community and Family Medicine at Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS), and often precepts first- and second-year medical students who periodically rotate through the office; when you come to TPMG Independence Family Medicine, you may meet a student and contribute to his or her education.  And, just as he enjoys teaching medical students, Dr. Byman enjoys educating patients about their conditions and ways to manage them—he believes knowledge is the key to helping people make the best decisions regarding their health.

Dr. Byman is very much a Virginia Beach local.  He grew up in the Pembroke neighborhood (adjacent to his current office), graduated from Princess Anne High School, and attended Old Dominion University on a Navy ROTC scholarship, majoring in oceanography and geology.  After college, he served as an officer in the U.S. Navy in a number of roles.  After fulfilling his service obligation, he left the Navy to study medicine at EVMS.  Dr. Byman then went on to complete a Family Medicine Residency at the University of Cincinnati, where he also earned a Diploma in International Medicine and Community Health.  While in Cincinnati, he married and started a family.

After completing residency, Dr. Byman returned to Virginia Beach, where he resides today.  He joined TPMG in 2009, and became the managing physician at Independence Family Medicine in 2017.

His personal interests include cooking exciting (and nutritious) foods, traveling to experience different places and cultures, and spending time with his wife and children.
