TPMG Physical Therapist Earns Certification in LSVT BIG for Parkinson’s Disease

November 15, 2023

Newport News, Virginia – Tidewater Physicians Multispecialty Group is pleased to announce that TPMG Physical Therapist, Michael Bolosan PT, DPT earned his certification in LSVT BIG. This treatment protocol trains patients with Parkinson’s Disease (PD) on how to improve motor functions within their body.

“People with Parkinson’s Disease and similar conditions often experience movement that is slower or smaller than normal, which can make everyday activities more difficult and increase the chances of having a fall,” said Bolosan. A recent study conducted by the National Institutes of Health found that between 45% and 68% of those with PD will fall each year in the United States and between 50% and 80% have recurrent falls.

While we may not need to actively think about the way we move, those with PD aren’t always able to take these seemingly automatic movements for granted. The dopamine in our brains is largely responsible for controlling our body’s movement. With PD, the brain has a reduced level of dopamine, thereby affecting a patient’s mobility. Mobility issues are often associated with PD, including regulating the speed/size of movements, lack of mobility, changes in posture, trouble turning, balance issues, and gait abnormalities.

“LSVT BIG is a treatment protocol designed to help those individuals [with PD] improve the quality and amplitude of their movement to decrease their risk of falling and allow them to safely do the activities that are important to them,” said Bolosan.

Mobility issues associated with PD can make everyday tasks like getting out of bed, loading the dishwasher, getting dressed, or getting around especially challenging. This treatment protocol effectively retrains the body to function despite these deficits, essentially “recalibrating” the patient’s perception of movement. By re-educating the sensorimotor system, patients with PD and similar conditions report improved balance, increased trunk rotation, faster walking, and greater ease with daily tasks. LSVT BIG is customizable to each patient’s unique needs and goals.
