PRP Hair Loss Treatment

Hair loss is incredibly common in both men and women in the United States. Male and female pattern hair loss is the most common cause of hair loss, affecting almost 80 million people in the United States, alone. Losing hair can affect one’s self-esteem, cause a reduction in one’s work and sexual performance, and even lead to social withdrawal, anxiety, anger, and depression. Fortunately, there are treatments available to promote and maintain hair growth for those suffering from male and female pattern hair loss, including PRP therapy.

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Treatment for Hair Loss

PRP (platelet-rich plasma) therapy involves the use of injections into the scalp to trigger natural hair growth and maintain hair density by increasing the blood supply to the hair follicles. Often combined with other forms of treatment for hair loss, PRP is a non-invasive way to kickstart your body’s hair growth.

PRP is not a new treatment for the body. In fact, PRP is used to treat injured ligaments, tendons, and muscles. During PRP therapy, your doctor will take a sample of your blood (often from the arm), and use a centrifuge (a device that will quickly spin your blood in order to separate different components) to create the platelet-rich plasma. Once your surgeon has created the platelet-rich plasma, the solution is injected into targeted areas of the scalp in order to promote hair growth.

PRP scalp injections often involve three injections initially, around one month apart, and then multiple injections every three to six months. There are many forms of treatment available for those suffering from hair loss. Make an appointment with one of our dermatologists in Newport News VA to find out if PRP therapy may be right for you.
