Dr. Matthew Backens Opens New Practice in Edinburgh

Chesapeake, Virginia – Tidewater Physicians Multispecialty Group (TPMG), a network of over 220 physicians and advanced clinicians in over 85 offices across the Tidewater area, is pleased to announce the opening of TPMG Edinburgh Family Medicine in the Chesapeake area.
A native of the area, Matthew Backens, MD practiced in the Chesapeake area for eight years before joining TPMG Holland Road Family Medicine in Virginia Beach. Now, Dr. Backens will return to the community he cherishes to found his new practice, TPMG Edinburgh Family Medicine. Dr. Backens will provide a more classical approach to family medicine, including home visits, well-baby checks, and partnering with local institutions, while also fostering innovation through telehealth visits and a streamlined approach to health care focused on tailoring his services to community need.
“We are meeting the community where they are,” said Dr. Backens.
“To me, it matters that Chesapeake is a safe and healthy place. Our goal is to wrap the service around the patient, making sure their time is spent receiving care rather than sitting in a waiting room,” Dr. Backens adds.
Dr. Backens is a board certified family medicine physician with over a decade of experience practicing in the Tidewater area. Dr. Backens earned his undergraduate degree from Christopher Newport University in Newport News, graduating summa cum laude. He completed his Doctor of Medicine from Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS) in Norfolk. Following medical school, Dr. Backens completed his family medicine residency at Portsmouth Family Medicine and was elected chief resident his final year.
Dr. Backens chose to pursue a career in family medicine because it encompasses a wide variety of medical knowledge, continuous learning, and an in-depth understanding of the complex relationships between each system in the human body. As a family medicine physician, he enjoys the unique opportunity to impact his patients’ health across their lifespan.
