Newport News Physical Therapist and Ehlers-Danlos Society ECHO Provider

Anna Patterson, PT, DPT

Anna Patterson, PT, DPT, is a board-certified Doctor of Physical Therapy with TPMG Physical Therapy in Newport News. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Cellular, Molecular, and Physiological Biology from Christopher Newport University in Newport News. Furthering her education, Anna earned her Doctor of Physical Therapy from Old Dominion University in Norfolk and completed a Sports Physical Therapy Residency through Riverside Health. A member of multiple professional organizations, Anna belongs to the American Academy of Sports Physical Therapy (AAASPT), the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA), and the Virginia Physical Therapy Association (VPTA). She also holds an Emergency Medical Responder for the Athlete (ERA) certification and is an Ehlers-Danlos Society ECHO Provider. Anna joined TPMG Physical Therapy in 2025.

Inspired by her own experience with physical therapy in her youth, Anna discovered a passion for helping others achieve their highest level of function. After working with sports physical therapists while sailing for Christopher Newport University, Anna dedicated her career to ensuring high-level sports physical therapy is accessible to the everyday community athlete. Through her sports residency program, Anna developed skills to triage injuries from the moment they happen on the field, begin early rehabilitation for both surgical and non-surgical cases, and return patients to their highest desired level of activity.

As a physical therapist, Anna provides individualized, evidence-based care that caters to the goals, lifestyle, and unique circumstances of each patient. She partners with patients to guide informed decision-making and craft an attainable plan of action that meets individual needs. Recognizing that everyone’s body is unique, Anna enjoys taking a step back to see the bigger picture, problem-solving, and finding a workable solution that will best fit her patients’ desires. Her goal is to empower patients to feel confident in rehabilitating any injuries while providing them with the tools to prevent and tackle future injuries.

Anna sees patients of all ages for a wide range of orthopedic and sports injuries. She has a particular passion for treating surgical and non-surgical knee and shoulder injuries. Additionally, Anna has a special medical interest in working with hypermobile athletes and those with hypermobile spectrum disorder (HSD) and Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS). As an Ehlers-Danlos Society ECHO provider, Anna is uniquely equipped to provide up-to-date, expert care for those with HSD and EDS, further bridging the gap in care for many who experience diagnosis and treatment delays in traditional healthcare settings.

From the weekend warrior to professional athletes, Anna enjoys working with anyone who aims to improve their function and mobility. A proponent of education, Anna also teaches students at Christopher Newport University and has numerous research publications. A Hampton Roads native, Anna enjoys the opportunity to give back to her community, ensuring many in the region have access to high-quality sports physical therapy.

When she isn’t in the office, Anna can be found sailing in both local and national events and serving as a coach, race official, and umpire for high school and college sailing programs. She also enjoys rock climbing, spending time with her family and dog, and serving on the board of directors of the local non-profit S.I.M.plify Healthcare, a 501(c)(3) organization working to increase health literacy in Hampton Roads.

Anna warmly welcomes patients to make an appointment to see her at TPMG Physical Therapy in Newport News.
