A. Janae Johnson, MD is a board-certified radiologist with additional fellowship training in breast imaging, practicing at TPMG Imaging and Breast Centers in Newport News and Williamsburg. She joined TPMG in 2011 and, alongside fellow radiologists Jeffrey VandeSand, MD, and Matthew Doherty, MD, offers state-of-the-art imaging services to the Hampton Roads community

Dr. Johnson earned her undergraduate degree locally from the College of William & Mary. She attended Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), where she earned a Master of Science in Anatomy and a Doctorate of Medicine from the Medical College of Virginia (MCV). Following medical school, Dr. Johnson completed a transitional internship at Riverside Hospital in Newport News before returning to MCV to complete her radiology residency and breast imaging fellowship.

During her medical school clinical rotations, Dr. Johnson realized she wanted to pursue a specialty that would allow her to work with other women. She ultimately decided on radiology and a specialization in breast imaging, which enables her to see patients daily and to work in a team-centered approach to their care.   

“I love being part of a team of physicians who work together to best treat patients with breast cancer. We work closely with the pathologists to ensure correlation with imaging findings, the surgeons for preoperative planning, and oncologists and radiation oncologists for assessment of response to treatment. We can set patients up for success and strive to provide compassionate care for women as we diagnose breast cancer and work to transition them from a patient to a survivor.”    

As a full-time breast imaging specialist, Dr. Johnson has the knowledge, expertise, and state-of-the-art equipment to detect and diagnose breast cancer in its earliest stages. She is immensely proud of the TPMG Imaging and Breast Center, earning the prestigious designation of “Breast Center of Excellence” by the American College of Radiology. This rigorous and extensive accreditation process signifies to patients the excellence and quality of the imaging studies completed at the TPMG Imaging and Breast Center. 

Dr. Johnson is the Director of Breast Imaging for the TPMG Imaging and Breast Centers and has been continuously named a Coastal Virginia Magazine “Top Doc” in Radiology since 2015, as voted for by her peers in the Hampton Roads area.

Outside of the office, Dr. Johnson enjoys spending time with her family and friends. She stays busy with her four children (three daughters and one son) and two dogs. She enjoys any activities on the water, reading, exercising, cooking, and traveling.
