Tharini Gunapalan, MD is a board-certified internal medicine and endocrinology physician with TPMG Coastal Endocrinology- Suffolk. She graduated with honors from The University of Western Ontario in London, Canada with a Bachelor of Science before pursuing her Doctor of Medicine at Ross University School of Medicine in Dominica, West Indies. Furthering her education, she completed her Internal Medicine Residency training and Endocrine and Metabolic Disorders fellowship at Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk. Dr. Gunapalan is affiliated with multiple professional organizations, including the Endocrine Society, the American Association of Clinical Endocrinology, the American Thyroid Association, and the American College of Physicians. In 2023, Dr. Gunapalan joined TPMG Coastal Endocrinology – Suffolk.

After graduating from her residency program in 2017, Dr. Gunapalan served as a hospitalist/internist for three years before pursuing her endocrinology fellowship. Introduced to the medical profession at an early age, Dr. Gunapalan observed her grandfather practicing medicine as a child. Inspired by his experience and driven by a desire to establish long-term patient relationships and positively impact their lives, she chose the medical profession.

Dr. Gunapalan firmly believes in the importance of patient education in delivering effective medical care. She strives to enhance patients’ understanding of how their conditions impact their overall health, often leading to improved outcomes. Dr. Gunapalan collaborates with patients through evidence-based medicine to develop comprehensive treatment plans.

She sees adults for a range of conditions including type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus, hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, calcium and bone disorders, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), pituitary and adrenal disorders, obesity, and more. She has a particular medical interest in diabetes and thyroid disorders. As a proponent of research and education, she has delivered presentations at various state and national medical conferences and has contributed to multiple peer-reviewed publications.

When she isn’t seeing patients, Dr. Gunapalan enjoys spending time with her spouse and their two children, traveling, and baking. She grew up in Toronto, Canada, but enjoys the Hampton Roads area as a great place to raise a family and its proximity to the beach.

We do not accept walk-ins or same-day appointments.

Missed Appointment/Cancellation Policy

When an appointment is missed, our first concern is the patient’s safety and well-being and that nothing unfortunate has occurred. However, failure to show up and same-day cancellations prevent other patients from being seen. As a result of same-day cancellations and no-shows, TPMG Coastal Endocrinology will assess the following fees for same-day cancellations and no-show appointments:

Follow-up appointments: $25             

Fees are assessed per occurrence and must be paid at least 48 hours prior to the patient’s next scheduled appointment or that appointment will be canceled.

After Hours Care

We have an on-call line where patients can reach the provider on-call for pressing matters.

Insurance

Billing

Copayments are due at the time of service.

Prescriptions

Please allow up to 48 hours for prescription refills.
