Omar S. Ahmed, MD, is a board-certified internal medicine and rheumatology physician with TPMG Rheumatology in Newport News. Dr. Ahmed recieved a Bachelor of Arts from Furman University before earning his Bachelor of Health Sciences and Doctor of Medicine from Saba University School of Medicine in the Caribbean. Furthering his education, he completed his Internal Medicine Residency at the Charleston Area Medical Center and West Virginia University – Charleston Division in Charleston, West Virginia. Dr. Ahmed also completed a Rheumatology Fellowship at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire. Dr. Ahmed is a member of the American College of Physicians and joined TPMG Rheumatology in 2025. 

With a diverse medical career spanning internal medicine, hospitalist care, and rheumatology, Dr. Ahmed has considerable experience in many aspects of patient care. Beginning his career with the United States Air Force, Dr. Ahmed primarily practiced outpatient internal medicine at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland. During his time in the military, he had the honor to care for the nation’s veterans, placing an emphasis on preventative care, chronic disease management, and continuity of care. Upon separating from the military, Dr. Ahmed transitioned to nocturnist medicine, where he had the responsibility to admit, manage, and stabilize patients during night shifts. Afterward, he went on to accept a fellowship at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, choosing the field of rheumatology for its multi-specialty discipline, complexity of autoimmune conditions, and the innovation and advancement of therapeutics, which have drastically changed patient lives. 

Dr. Ahmed practices evidence-based medicine with a patient-centered approach, integrating current research and clinical guidelines with each patient’s unique values, circumstances, and goals, forging long-standing patient relationships that increase trust and improve outcomes. He believes that open dialogue and honest communication are fundamental to the patient-physician relationship, fostering conversations that promote mutual understanding, align expectations, and create space for shared decision-making.  

Above all, Dr. Ahmed deeply values the trust his patients place in his and his team’s judgment. Through his practice, he approaches each patient encounter with the intention to earn that trust through empathy, clinical experience, and a commitment to patient well-being. Dr. Ahmed sees patients 18 years or older for various conditions relating to rheumatology, including rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, Sjogren’s disease, systemic sclerosis, and gout, among others.
