Mike W. Hanger, FNP-C

Nurse Practitioner in Williamsburg

Mike Hanger, FNP-C, received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Old Dominion University in Norfolk. Furthering his education he earned a Master of Science in Nursing, Family Medicine from James Madison University (JMU) in Harrisonburg. He is board certified by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners and has practiced medicine for more than five years.

Mike was inspired to join the field of medicine after taking care of a sick student while guiding a backcountry wilderness trip. Her trust in his care inspired Mike to learn more. He enjoys being a health care detective and educator, helping people in all circumstances.

By fostering relationships built in mutual respect, he gives patients the time and space to tell their story, using the information they provide to make key decisions for their care. He emphasizes the importance of partnership between the provider and patient and strives to educate his patients about preventative care and disease management. He believes that good health comes down to basic healthy living and holistic care. As a medication minimalist, Mike endeavors to only prescribe medications that he deems necessary utilizing holistic intervention therapies.

Mike treats patients of all ages, focusing on preventative care, chronic care, adult and pediatric mental health/psychiatrics, diabetes management, obesity, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, mild orthopedic injuries and more. He has specific medical interests in childhood acute and chronic illnesses, and developmental delays for his pediatric patients as well as mental health, chronic disease management, and preventative care for adults.

In addition to his role as precept for nurse practitioner students at JMU, Mike is a member of multiple professional organizations including the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners, the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, and the Virginia Council of Nurse Practitioners. His experience includes working as a Registered Nurse with Bon Secours and Hospital Corporation of America in Kilmarnock and Mechanicsville and as a Transplant Coordinator for United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) in Richmond.

When he isn’t seeing patients, Mike enjoys spending time near the water with his family and their dogs. Mike grew up in the Williamsburg area and currently resides in Lanexa with his wife and two daughters.

TPMG welcomed Mike to West Point Family Medicine in 2016. He then moved to TPMG Norge Family Medicine in 2021.
