Backens, MD, is a board-certified family medicine physician in Chesapeake, VA, with over a decade of experience practicing in the Tidewater area. He founded a new primary care practice in Chesapeake: TPMG Edinburgh Family Medicine. His special interests include children’s health, sports medicine, and cardiovascular disease. Dr. Backens earned his undergraduate degree from Christopher Newport University in Newport News, graduating summa cum laude. He completed his Doctor of Medicine from Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS) in Norfolk. Following medical school, Dr. Backens completed his family medicine residency at Portsmouth Family Medicine and was elected chief resident in his final year. Dr. Backens chose to pursue a career in family medicine because it encompasses a wide variety of medical knowledge, continuous learning, and an in-depth understanding of the complex relationships between each system in the human body. As a family medicine physician, he enjoys the unique opportunity to impact his patients’ health across their lifespan. With years of experience in family medicine, Dr. Backens offers comprehensive primary care services, including well-baby exams, sports physicals, cardiovascular disease, and asthma-related conditions. Dr. Backens is devoted to building trusted relationships with his patients and believes all areas of a patient’s life impact patient care, not just medical history. He encourages his patients to take an active role in their health as he seeks to deliver the highest quality care. He is an active member of numerous professional organizations and served as Chief of the Department of Family Medicine at Chesapeake Regional Medical Center from 2016 to 2020. In addition, he has been a community-based assistant professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine at EVMS. Dr. Backens is a member of the Virginia Academy of Family Practice, the American Academy of Family Practice, and the American Medical Association. He is well-respected in his field and has been honored as a Coastal Virginia Magazine “Top Doc” for consecutive years, as voted by his peers in the Hampton Roads community. In his free time, Dr. Backens enjoys spending time with his family, swimming, hiking, and playing a friendly basketball game. As a native of Hampton Roads, he loves the numerous cultural and historical sites throughout the area. He is an active member of his church and has coached YMCA basketball for several years.
