John C. Perry, MD, FCCP, earned undergraduate degrees in Biology and History from The College of William & Mary and a medical degree from Virginia Commonwealth University. He completed internship and residency training in Internal Medicine through Virginia Commonwealth University, as well as a 3-year fellowship program in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, during which time he was awarded Fellow of the Year. Dr. Perry is board certified in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Medicine, and Critical Care Medicine.

Dr. Perry became interested in medicine as a child and began his career as a medical provider in the 1990s as a local volunteer paramedic and firefighter. While he served the community in this capacity, Dr. Perry oversaw various units as a Crew Chief and training officer for paramedics and other volunteers. This experience solidified his interest in pursuing medicine as his career and provided valuable knowledge and skill to help him care for his patients.

Initially, Dr. Perry was drawn to the fast-paced, exciting nature of the field of critical care and quickly realized how much he enjoyed caring for patients with lung problems. Today as a practicing physician, Dr. Perry treats all varieties of pulmonary diseases and conditions, such as asthma, COPD, lung cancer, pneumonia, pulmonary fibrosis, and pulmonary hypertension. He has a special interest in the early detection of lung cancer through minimally-invasive techniques, such as bronchoscopy. One of his areas of expertise involves procedures which improve symptoms, quality of life, and survival in advanced-stage cancers. Dr. Perry is one of the few Pulmonologists in this area with the interest and training to perform these specialized procedures.

Dr. Perry is dedicated to patient education and patient advocacy. He feels an informed patient is more capable of being involved in the treatment plan which will meet their needs and provide a better quality of life. He strives to be a partner in his patients’ care while empowering them to make informed decisions which will lead to improved outcomes.

Dr. Perry has spent almost half his life as a resident of Hampton Roads, and he enjoys caring for patients in this area. He has been recognized as a “Top Doc” in this region for six years running. When he is not at work, he spends time at sporting events with his family and in the mountains. He is a member of the American College of Chest Physicians and the Society of Critical Care Medicine and is a great supporter of the local community.
