Family Medicine Doctor in Hampton, VA

Derrick C. Whiting, DO is board certified in family medicine and osteopathic manipulative medicine by the American Osteopathic Board of Family Physicians. Dr. Whiting earned a Bachelor of Science from Metropolitan State University of Denver in Denver, Colorado. Furthering his education, Dr. Whiting earned his medical degree from the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine in Blacksburg, Virginia. He then completed his Family Medicine residency at Reid Health in Richmond, Indiana. Dr. Whiting joined TPMG Tidewater Family Medicine in 2022.

Dr. Whiting was drawn to the medical field by his passion for learning who, what, how, and why we are as human beings. As he came to understand more about humanity, he gained greater respect, empathy, compassion, and love for people, which invoked a desire to help others as a physician. Dr. Whiting strives to build strong relationships with his patients and colleagues, creating bonds established in mutual trust and respect, as he works with patients and providers to promote healthy lifestyles within the Hampton Roads community.

As an osteopathic family physician, he believes in providing holistic medical care, considering the whole person’s mental, physical, and spiritual needs when developing a healthcare strategy. Dr. Whiting is committed to empowering his patients to make informed decisions about their healthcare, offering up-to-date and evidence-based treatment options that address the root causes of their health concerns.

Dr. Whiting provides comprehensive family medicine care to all ages, addressing wellness visits, urgent care issues, minor surgical procedures, and chronic conditions. He also has a particular medical interest in Osteopathic Manipulative Therapy (OMT), which is a hands-on approach to restoring the body to a more balanced state. OMT can be used to treat a variety of conditions including muscle/joint pain, low back pain, neck pain, headaches/migraines, pelvic pain, sciatica, and more. Dr. Whiting is also interested in treating athletic injuries and preventative medicine by way of health maintenance, fitness, and nutrition. He is a member of multiple professional organizations, including the American Osteopathic Association, the American Medical Association, and the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians.

Though Dr. Whiting is initially from central Virginia, Hampton Roads became home for him and his wife during their service in the US Air Force at Langley Air Force Base. He started a family in this community and built great relationships with amazing people in the area. Dr. Whiting enjoys spending time with his wife and three children, spending many weekends at their sporting and scholastic events and watching them grow into amazing human beings. He loves spending time outdoors, fishing, hunting, golfing, snowboarding, hiking, and participating in other sports and activities.
