David W. Hess, PhD, ABPP, has an extensive medical and academic background. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Millersville University of Pennsylvania. Furthering his education, he earned a master’s degree from Farleigh Dickinson University in School Psychology and a Doctor of Philosophy in Clinical Psychology from Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He completed his post-doctoral education at Hahnemann University School of Medicine in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is board certified by the American Board of Professional Psychology in Rehabilitation Psychology, with special interests in neurodegenerative diseases and dementia.

Dr. Hess enjoys providing comprehensive assessments to patients with a variety of neurological care needs such as traumatic brain injury, stroke, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, seizures, tumors, and attention deficit disorders. He has also served as a consultant to the Federal Aviation Association as a neuropsychologist. He served in the U.S. Air Force and the U.S. Public Health Service/U.S. Navy as a clinical psychologist.

Drawn to the medical field by a fascination with the brain and how it processes information, Dr. Hess has over 30 years of experience as a practicing psychologist. He strives to make his patients comfortable during the testing and evaluation process by providing a comprehensive overview of their results. In doing so, he gives the patient and their family time to take steps necessary to maximize their recovery. By assessing an individual’s strengths and weaknesses, Dr. Hess can develop a seamless transition of care with the patient’s primary care provider and create a cohesive plan for recovery.

Dr. Hess treats a wide array of patients from young adults to seniors. He sees patients primarily on a referral basis from physicians whose patients are experiencing cognitive changes that impact their everyday life. This includes traumatic brain injuries, learning disabilities, attention deficits, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, seizures, demyelinating diseases, dementias, or any other neurological disease process.

He is a member of the American Board of Professional Psychology, the American Psychological Association, the National Academy of Neuropsychology, and the Virginia Psychological Association/ Virginia Academy of Clinical Psychologists.

Born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Dr. Hess is no stranger to Hampton Roads as he practiced clinical psychology, both in the military and in civilian practice for many years.
