What is physical therapy?
Physical Therapy is a dynamic profession with an established theoretical and scientific base and widespread clinical applications in the restoration, maintenance, and promotion of optimal physical function. TPMG physical therapists are movement experts who help improve mobility and function, thereby enhancing health, well-being, and quality of life. Their services help to improve range of motion, minimize or manage pain, restore function, and prevent disability.

Is a physical therapist a doctor?
No, a physical therapist (PT) is not a certified medical doctor (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathy (DO), but they may hold a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT). While physical therapists do not prescribe medications or perform surgery, they work closely with patients to help them regain movement, reduce pain, and achieve rehabilitation through exercises, therapies, and other treatments.
At TPMG Physical Therapy, our physical therapists work closely with physicians, athletic trainers, performance specialists, and other members of your healthcare team to create a collaborative care plan designed to return patients to action on or off the field.

Is physical therapy painful?
Physical Therapy is not designed to be painful; however, you may experience discomfort or soreness, especially in the first stages of rehabilitation, as your body adjusts to new movement and muscle work. In fact, physical therapy is one of the best treatments to relieve pain, rather than cause further harm.
Do I need a referral to see a physical therapist?
TPMG Physical Therapy only requires a referral for Medicare Part B. Tricare Prime policyholders must have their PCM submit an authorization through the Humana Military provider portal. While your PT team will work closely with your medical providers to provide comprehensive care that addresses all your needs, referrals are not exclusively required.
What should I wear for my physical therapy appointment?
While some attire is dependent on the type of physical therapy you’re undergoing, most patients should wear loose-fitting, flexible athletic clothing with comfortable, supportive footwear to their appointments. Avoid tight-fitting garments and constrictive clothing that could restrict your full range of movement.
Is physical therapy covered by my insurance?
TPMG Physical Therapy accepts certain insurance providers; however, your specific coverage may depend on the type of treatment you require, your referral, and other factors. The best way to learn if your physical therapy will be covered by insurance is to contact the member services team for your personal insurance policy, typically located on the back of your insurance ID card. Isn’t physical therapy only for rehabilitation of an injury or surgery?
No, in fact, physical therapy is designed to help with much more than recovery from an injury or surgery. It can help individuals manage chronic conditions, such as arthritis, vertigo, and pulmonary disease, among others. You can improve your balance, reduce joint or other area pain, increase mobility, and enhance your athletic performance. Serving as a preventative line of treatment, physical therapy also addresses deficits that could lead to future injuries in athletes, older adults, and others.
