Don’t let concerning signs of skin cancer go unchecked. Suspicious spots or unusual moles could be your first sign of skin cancer. TPMG Hampton Roads Center for Dermatology will host a free skin cancer spot check event for non-established patients and members of the Hampton Roads community on Friday, May 1, from 12:00-2:00 p.m. at their Newport News office located on Omni Boulevard.
“Early detection of skin cancer saves lives. Although Melanoma, a potentially fatal form of skin cancer, is highly treatable if detected early,” said board-certified dermatologist, Valerie M. Harvey, MD, MPH, FAAD of TPMG Hampton Roads Center for Dermatology.
Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States and worldwide. In the U.S., more than 9,500 people are diagnosed with skin cancer every day, and more than two people die from skin cancer every hour. Fortunately, with early detection, skin cancers like melanoma are often survivable.
Unlike many other forms of cancer, skin cancer can be detected on the skin’s surface. A skin check is a non-invasive, painless physical exam in which a trained professional examines areas of concern on your skin and determines whether they may need follow-up. Because not all skin cancers look alike, it often takes a trained eye to make a determination.
If you have a new spot or any changes in spots, such as itching, size, or bleeding, you should see a board-certified dermatologist for evaluation. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) recommends that adults be their own health advocates by regularly conducting skin self-exams and seeking care from board-certified dermatologists regarding concerning skin spots.
