Our office uses the Virginia Prescription Drug Monitoring Program in order to monitor and reduce the risk of prescription drug misuse.  Patients showing misuse of medication(s) or attempts of refills by numerous physicians will be discharged from our practice.

Founded in 1979, Chessen & Associates in Newport News, Virginia, was a private group practice specializing in mental health counseling.  TPMG announced Chessen & Associates joined our team of professionals in June 2015 as Chessen Behavioral Health.

Our caring staff is here to help you with all your counseling needs, and to deliver high quality care that is safe and caring.  We work in partnership with all our patients to rebuild and enhance their overall health and well-being.  We offer intensive outpatient programs, as well as individual and family psychotherapy.

  • Psychiatric Evaluation and Diagnosis
  • Individual, Couples and Family Psychotherapy
  • Hypnosis for Habit Control
  • Diagnosis, Evaluation and Treatment of Addictive Disorders
  • Psychopharmacology (Psychiatric Medications)

Psychiatric Evaluation

A comprehensive psychiatric evaluation may be necessary to diagnose any number of emotional, behavioral or developmental disorders.

Individual Psychotherapy

Individual psychotherapy involves regularly scheduled talks between the patient and one of our mental health professionals.  The sessions may focus on current or past problems, experiences, thoughts, feelings or relationships.  By sharing experiences with a trained empathic person, individuals may gradually come to understand more about themselves and their problems.

Family and Marital Therapy

Family and marital therapy focuses very clearly on the relationships involved, and by involving all the people concerned, seeks to help those relationships work better.

Suboxone Detox

Narcotic (opiate) addiction is a chronic medical disorder that with our current state of knowledge cannot be cured, but can be managed.  Many patients are able to achieve abstinence and recovery, which are the goals of our program.  We offer Suboxone treatment for addictions to prescription and non-prescription opiates including narcotics pain medication, opiate derivatives, heroin and methadone.

Treatment is administered only in conjunction with either our Suboxone group and/or with our intensive outpatient programs (IOP) and peer support, such as NA and AA.

Oral (under the tongue) Buprenorphine combined with Naloxone (Suboxone) may be used for detoxification.  A medical evaluation is done at our office first, and if you are deemed an appropriate candidate for the program, a separate appointment will be made for detox to begin.  Please contact our office for dates and times.

General Detox

If the patient is medically stable, we offer substance abuse treatment and outpatient detoxification from alcohol, sedatives, tranquilizers and other prescription and non-prescription drugs.

Caritas, Intensive Outpatient Program

Caritas is a comprehensive program developed to help clients achieve and maintain a lifestyle free from alcohol and drugs.  The program consists of a minimum of 24 (or as coordinated with insurance providers) sessions of group therapy and psycho educational groups.  Please contact our office for dates and times.

New Life Education and Support Group

The New Life group is designed to serve adults who are diagnosed with the disease of narcotic/opiate dependence and are being treated with Suboxone.  Please contact our office for dates and times.

Aftercare Group

Our Aftercare program offers our clients who have completed our intensive Outpatient Program an opportunity to reflect on experiences from the past week that may have an impact on their recovery and to maintain and increase coping skills that are critical to relapse prevention.
